Wet sanding

from€400· 2–3 days

Sanding fresh paint after a respray starts at €400 and takes 2–3 days, depending on how many panels were painted and the state of the surface. I sand the fresh paint to remove dust nibs and orange peel, then polish it back to full gloss. This work takes experience and a steady hand – a mistake means repainting.

Included

  • Paint-thickness measurement before starting
  • Dust-nib and orange-peel removal
  • Wet and machine sanding in stages
  • Polishing back to full gloss
  • Inspection under halogen and LED lighting

Why a freshly painted car is not finished

Even the best paint shop paints in the real world: dust lands in the clear coat and the surface dries into the slightly wavy texture called orange peel. Next to factory paint on the neighbouring panel, it shows. Sanding removes the top layer of fresh paint and levels the surface; polishing brings back the gloss – only then does the repainted panel blend with the rest of the car.

Work many will not take on

Sanding fresh paint means deliberately removing material that was just expensively applied – there is no room for error. That is why I measure the paint before every step and sand in stages, from finer grits to polishing compound, checking under the lamp throughout. The gallery documents a fully sanded Audi S4 after a whole-car respray and a Clio RS after a repaint.

When sanding is worth it

After any respray where the repair must be undetectable; after buying a car with fresh paintwork; and on older paint with defects too deep for polishing alone. Whether your car carries enough paint for safe sanding, I can tell you after measuring it at the free inspection.

FAQ

The questions I hear first

A ceramic coating is a liquid protection for gloss, easier washing and resistance to UV and chemicals. PPF is a thicker clear film that physically stops stone chips. Ceramic protects against the environment, film against damage – for new cars the best answer is often a combination of both.
